Dylan woke up, sore and bruised, but alive. Head swimming, she tried to sit up, pushing nausea aside as she swung her legs out of a bed in a well-lit room, windows betraying early morning light. When everything stopped spinning, Dylan looked out her window to see bamboo shoots growing around a small pond, with cranes walking delicately in the water. An orange sky danced against a foggy mountain in the distance. The smell of cherry blossoms lingered through the open window. All was quiet. Where was she? She hadn’t seen this place before.

Getting to her feet shakily, she swallowed. She wondered when the last time she ate was. Probably in Desmidondre’s castle, which was how many days ago? Dylan strode over and looked in the mirror, shaking her head to clear it of grogginess.

She couldn’t have been out of it for more than a day, maybe less. Her white nightgown was clean, and despite the bruises on her skin, the dirt had been wiped off of her.

Dylan smiled. Had she actually, no joke, been able to transform and keep her tigress body? A warmth spread throughout her body, and she purred lowly in her throat.

There was a small dresser tucked into the corner. Dylan opened it to find her clothes there, neatly folded. She got dressed and then crept out of the small room and into the hallway. The building she was in was nothing more than an expansive cottage, the walls and the floors washed completely with white hardwood.

She heard voices outside, near what must be the kitchen. But she didn’t hear the person she most wanted to see, so she kept going. She walked down the hallway, passing closed door after closed door until she found one slightly open. The sound of pen scratching upon paper was inside.

Dylan nudged it open. The writing paused, and Dylan poked her head in slowly, hoping she was disturbing no one. What she got was Talidin sitting upright at a desk, freshly clothed, shaven, thin and just as bruised as she was, yet looking happy as ever.

He smiled at her. “Hey there, thunderbolt.”

Dylan burst into the room and leapt into his arms, burying her face into Talidin’s shoulder. Talidin caught her and lifted her onto his lap, holding her tighter than he ever had before. Those strong arms encompassed her and held her close, never letting go, not ever. Dylan pulled her face away to look at her master, her lip quivering. “Daddy.”

He was crying, too. “My baby.” They embraced once more and Dylan let out a happy sigh of contentment, not caring whether they won or lost the war, whether Rachel was gaining power or if the entire world was falling apart at the seams. None of it mattered so long as Talidin was with her and he never left her again.

“I missed you more than I can tell you,” she whispered. “Each day felt terrible without you there. I needed you so much, needed your help so many times. I was so lost and confused.
